This I understand. If I could live with having two separate files, one 
BDBXML db container for the xml and one BDB container for the binary 
content then this would be fine. But my goal is to be able to maintain 
it all in one container for both BDBXML and BDB content.

I'll try to formulate an much more specific question:

Can I use the BDB api on a BDBXML database and make modifications to it. 
If I place non-BDBXML content into a BDBXML container, will it break the 
BDBXML capabilities of that Container.
