IANAL, but from my understanding, as long as you _distribute_ GPLed code
that your application uses (in any form, binary/source), your
application/code (the client app) becomes GPLed too, unless you are given a
separate license from the license holder.

As Toby mentions, if you distribute your application _without_ the linked
code, and ask the end-user to install it separately, then you are free to
choose whatever license you distribute _your application_ under; but of
course, if you are targeting less-savvy users with your application, then
this really isn't an option.
