SSL Connection

I haven't done much work with SSL connections. But is there a way to
create an SSL socket connection for remote JDBC connections? I have
tried creating a socket and opening the jdbc: url within the connection,
but it says that it does not recognize the jdbc protocol. 

Maybe I am just missing something here.
