i too had a problem with metakit on a windows share.  reading was no
problem, but update would damage the data.  my solution was to update
a local copy, then copy that to the server.  i never tried to
investigate just what was going on.

fortunatly the whole system got moved to linux, where updating on an
nfs mount is fine.
