Thanks for the fast reply; I must say it's not possible for me to upgrade
the OSF to 5.1, so I must think to some other ways to use this machine (I
tried installing Linux Red Hat 7.1 for Alpha Station 255, but after booting
the installer from the floppy, it was unable to locate the CD-ROM drive...).
Anyway, I've something interesting to add:

I've got an Alpha XP1000 system, with OSF1 v5.1(rev.732): I successfully
installed "Apache 1.3.9", "PHP 4.3.0", and tried to install
"mysql-standard-4.0.16-dec-osf5.1-alphaev67" (as suggested by you): the
problem was the same I described for the other system in my post, same the
log too; then I tried to install "mysql-3.22.30-dec-osf4.0f-alphaev6", and
this time it was... successfull!

So now I have a working Unix system (Alpha XP1000 system - OSF1 v5.1
rev.732), with:
- Apache 1.3.9
- PHP 4.3.0
- MySQL 3.22.30

Do you have any suggestions to let the MySQL 4.0.16 version work on it?
(NOTE: I tried to compile the source code directly on the XP1000, but the
attempt failed too)

I hope our posts would be useful for other users.

Rocco Rubino
