Hello!
I extracted and installed the
mysql-standard-4.0.17-pc-linux-i686.tar.gz
according to INSTALL-BINARY. Then I started the daemon and I
wanted
to set the db password. I get this response:

>[root@h68-144-46-247 etc]# mysqld_safe -user=mysql &
>[1] 4233
>[root@h68-144-46-247 etc]# [root@h68-144-46-247 bin]#
mysqladmin -u root >password my_password
>mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
>error: 'Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket
'/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' >(2)' Check that mysqld is
running and that the socket: '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock'
>exists!

I found out that there is no "mysql.sock" file in my
"/var/lib/mysql/".
What should I do?
Thank you.
