This should be addressed in the most recent releases of MySQL, and
consequently, should also be addressed in the next release of
Connector/MXJ.

That's good news, then.

At a guess, this is because mysqld, on the first run, takes longer to
write out the pid file than Connector/MXJ is waiting for it. I believe
this, also, will be addressed in the next development release of
Connector/MXJ.

Regardless, it sounds like you have found a work-around.
