return type for SUM(numeric-column) is String

hi..

 i'm using mysql server version 5.0.21-standard, and am seeing this
wierd behavior that SUM of a numeric column returns a java.lang.String
!

  was wondering if anyone else has seen this behavior, and if this is
a known issue, with (hopefully) a workaround..
