Java threads waiting on Mysql connections, but Mysql shows no evidence of this

I posted this question on StackOverflow, here's a link to my question:

In summary, my java code is waiting for a connection indefinitely, but
mysql doesn't seem to show this is the case.  I'd appreciate if someone
