MySQL Administrator, Mac OSX - can't connect to remote server

Hello,

Can't connect to _any_ remote host, receiving:

Connection Error
Could not connect to MySQL instance at [..]
Error: Unknown system variable 'sql_mode' (code 1193)

ping works, mysql from command line can connect just fine.

no problem with connecting to localhost via tcp/ip
