No, MA does not have to run for the scheduled backups. You did not  
mention the OS you are working on but we always use the scheduling  
feature of the OS to make that work (e.g. cron on Linux, task planner  
on Windows). If you are on Window you can easily start the scheduled  
task from the task list (see control panel). Make sure you used a  
stored connection for the task.
