Without wanting to start a language/MySQL combination war, MySQL is used with a lot more than just PHP under Unix/Linux :) A Unix/Linux ODBC driver is required for many applications that need to use a standardized interface to a DB (including MySQL, Oracle and others). Applications like Adobe ColdFusion (and others), Filemaker Pro and OpenOffice require ODBC if you want to access a DB - they do not provide native connectivity to MySQL. To answer the original question, while Connector/ODBC 5 is still in beta, the development team are concentrating on the Windows development until all of the features and functionality have been developed and declared to be in a stable state. Once the current beta reaches a point where the stability and functionality is at a level that the development team feel comfortable with, I'm sure a Unix/ Linux version will be available. If you want to try it, I believe the SVN repository of the C/ODBC driver is able to build a driver within Unix/Linux, but I haven't tried it myself.
