In this case, I have a 32-bit application (MS Office) that needs to see the 
MySQL ODBC driver. Because the OS is 64-bit, only the 64-bit MySQL ODBC will 
install. Since the driver is 64-bit, I am creating a system DSN for a 64-bit 
driver. As quoted above, a 32-bit application cannot see a 64-bit DSN.

The only workaround is to create a user DSN. Fortunately for me, most of our 
PCs have only one user.

And, of course,

"To maintain backward compatibility, no resolution for this problem is 
currently available."
