Is DBD-mysql-2.9004 work with the MySQL version: 3.22.22

I have the old mysql 3.22.22 server, when I try to install the 
DBD-mysql-2.9004
I got lots of errors when running "make test" as:
        Failed 68/68 tests, 0.00% okay
t/mysql2...........Had to create DBD::mysql::dr::imp_data_size 
unexpectedly at /tools/perl58/lib/site_perl/5.8.0/sun4_solaris/DBI.pm 
line 1011.
Use of uninitialized value in subroutine entry at 
/tools/perl58/lib/site_perl/5.8.0/sun4_solaris/DBI.pm line 1011.
Can't locate object method "connect" via package "Mysql" at 
/home/spg/jean/DBD-mysql-2.9004/blib/lib/Mysql.pm line 71.

I am wondering whether the errors are due to the MYSQL is too old?
If so, whether I have to up grade the MYSQL (down load and install), or 
I just need to download
the new MYSQL source to build the DBD-mysql-2.9004 and continue to use 
the old MYSQL?
