Installing DBD::mysql

I have a problem.  In order to install MySQL 5 on the server my ISP 
requires using their installation program.  It requires a password for 
root.  For some reason I cannot delete the password for root.  I have 
removed the value stored in the mysql user database for the root 
password, but when I login on the server into mysql as root, it still 
requires the original password.

Because of this I cannot install the DBD::mysql module.

Any suggestions would be welcome.
