Bug in DBD::mysql causes crash on mysql_ping from 4.006 onwards

We recently upgraded our DBD::mysql install, and started noticing 
intermittent client processes crashing.

After some investigation, it turns out that if a server connection times 
out, then when the client tries to do a mysql_ping, it'll crash the process. 
This bug is documented here:

It seems to have been around for a while (introduced between 4.006 and 
4.007) and is reported to be in 4.008 still.

This seems a pretty serious bug, and various distributions are or will ship 
with it (like Ubuntu Intrepid). Is anyone looking into this?
