Hey John;

Sounds to me like you need someone to perform an impact analysis on the affected applications.

Before you can decide which of the many possibly solutions are the best way, you would need to have that impact analysis performed.  The primary question to be asked would be:

In what ways does App X connect to the database?

For each of the affected apps of course.

After all, you could find someone offer a really elegant solution but also find that once implemented your production apps no longer work.  You probably want to avoid that scenario I'd imagine.

Once you know the various ways the apps connect to the database, only then can you end up deciding which solution(s) will work best in your situation.  With multiple apps connecting in multiple ways, you may require the implementation of multiple solutions.
