If you aren't talking billions of rows, Toad makes it easier than that. :)


1.       Export the existing table to a spreadsheet file.

2.       Insert the new column into the spreadsheet.

3.       F4 describe the table.

a.       Click on the Script tab

b.      Click on the icon to "Copy script to an Editor Window".

c.       Insert the new column into the script.

d.      Execute the script.

4.       Use the Data Import Wizard to import the spreadsheet.



And there are probably six other ways to do it. :)

... or I suppose you could drop all the columns after the intended insertion point, add the new column, then add all the other columns back. And then try to remember where you saved the data from the dropped columns - what? I was supposed to save that?

No.  Oracle doesn't allow that.  If you want to do that, you'll need to rebuild the table.
