Turn of user_friendly_names

I am wondering if anyone could answer a couple of Oracle questions for me.
 
We have a debate going on over here regarding the setting “user_friendly_names."  Can it be turned off on an existing Oracle RAC database without having to rebuild the database?  Does it cause any ill effects to turn it off, other than you can't use the friendly name to connect to it?
