Git and version 3.0

So all of this UTF-8 work got me thinking about making a 
separate subversion branch for it. Then I remembered I've 
been wanting to move to git (and have talked to some of you 
about it already). It might make sense to make the move 
from subversion to git while we are doing all the other 
major changes. Perhaps we even 'fork' now, and make the 3.0 
release where we switch from subversion to git officially. 
Or to put it another way, our first git release will be 
3.0 :) We'll keep subversion around for any more 2.x 
development (which there will be some of, espeically if 
it takes a while to iron out 3.0). Thoughts? Objections?
