[RESEND PATCH] rrd_daemon: pay attention to the return value of realpath

Apologies for the delay, email has been somewhat random the last few
weeks. Please find a re-send of the realpath patch. However there
should be a better fix that actually restores the regressed
functionality of auto-creating the directory.
