We already formed the SapForge project to maintain LGPLed drivers for 
SAPDB/MaxDB.

Me too, but it's a pity the source code is so old and chaotic.

Well, i think MySQL growed that much because of the number of Web 
Application that support it. Cause the PHP guys we're to stupid to 
recomm ODBC or any other standard API any PHP stuff out there has a fat 
MySQL Logo on it. In addition there are such application like 
Radius-Server, Mailservers etc. which can all store their config in a 
MySQL database. Why didn't they use ODBC?
It seems to me, that the whole scene seems to be MySQL sponsored.
