The most anoying limit in SAPDB is the row-length limit. That means a 
row of a table may not contain more data than 8KB which is 4000 chars if 
you use UNICODE.

You seem to experience another limit that forces the columns in a JOIN 
to not exceed a certain number of bytes. That's on reason why it is a 
bad idea in general to use string-columns for joins.
