The reasons to have identifiers in the source is so that we can recognize
what files were used to build a specific binary:

$ ident /bin/ls
/bin/ls:
     $NetBSD: crt0.c,v 1.16 2006/05/17 17:08:54 christos Exp $
     $NetBSD: cmp.c,v 1.17 2003/08/07 09:05:14 agc Exp $
     $NetBSD: ls.c,v 1.60 2006/08/21 19:08:47 christos Exp $
     $NetBSD: main.c,v 1.2 2000/07/29 03:46:15 lukem Exp $
     $NetBSD: print.c,v 1.41 2005/10/31 14:13:33 jschauma Exp $
     $NetBSD: stat_flags.c,v 1.19 2004/05/25 14:54:55 hannken Exp $
     $NetBSD: util.c,v 1.29 2006/04/08 22:28:06 jschauma Exp $

Yes, I agree about about the modern SCM comment, but I don't see how
this eliminates the need for embedded identifiers.
