Support for new field types and features introduced by MS SQL 2000 (TDS version 7.1 now after the recent "Renumbering TDS Protocol Versions As Microsoft Calls Them" event, once referred to as 8.0 by FreeTDS), MS SQL 2005 (TDS 7.2) and… well, not sure if there are any new MS SQL 2008 features supported in any way.
I hear there's even support for SSL-encrypted connections these days, which may be of interest to you in your hosted situation.

By installing a current nightly version, you'd at the very least get the MS SQL 2000-level support (TDS ver. 7.1) back.
Anyway, I should let somebody more appropriate answer you.
I stopped using MS SQL and thus FreeTDS seven years ago. Anything more recent than that I just picked up while lurking on this mailing list here. I have the strangest aversion to unsubscribing.
