Difference between isql and tsql

I have been configuring an ODBC/FreeTDS setup and I for some reason can only
get tsql to connect via: tsql -S SQLSERVER -U dbusername -P passwerd
The tsql lets me run stored procedures and everything.
I cannot get isql to connect. My end objective is to use php to query the DB
so any feedback will be awesome.

I will continue reading manuals.
