Igor, thanks. I see there is an --enable-shared option. I'll give that  
a try.  I've noticed there are cygwin ports of freetds-0.82 but they  
seem to be built with support or iodbc. I've been building for  
unixodbc. If this --enable-shared doesn't give me a valid driver  
library to use with unixodbc, I will try building iodbc and using that  
with the port of freetds.
I wish I understood this better... maybe my wish is being answered.
