In a subdirectly under /home/myself/ with a mere:

./configure --prefix/home/myself/temp/unixODBC/unixODBC-2.3.0/target
make
make install

then I could see, finally, /home/myself/temp/unixODBC/unixODBC-
2.3.0/target/target/include/sql.sh

However because I still had 'error: sql.h: No such file or directly' in freeTDS 
config.log after a freeTDS:
./configure --with-unixodbc=/home/myself/temp/unixODBC/unixODBC-2.3.0/target

I've copied theses sql* in other locations like:
/home/myself/temp/unixODBC/unixODBC-2.3.0/target/lib

but I still get this message. 

Now I do have a number of error messages in the unixODBC config.log itself. I'm 
not sure of the importance of these. No indication that the overall 
installation failed. The utility odcbc_config is responsive.
