Thanks for your email and sorry for the belated reply. Just took me a 
while to get back to it. Anyway, you said this:

In fact I did forget those packages. I was installing ddd on a fairly 
minimal install of CentOS 5 and didn't realize I didn't have all of the 
development packages needed. Once I fixed that all was well. Thanks for 
the tip.
