make ddd.C fails

I have tried several different versions of compilers from 3.4.6 to 4.1.2
with the same error.  Also, I tried building 3.3.9, 3.3.11, and
3.3.12-test2.  I am guessing this has already been covered, but I can't
find the answer in the archives.

ddd.C fails with error

strclass.h:649: error: expected identifier before '(' token

followed by many more errors.

If this is a new problem, I will post the full results of ./configure and
./make leading to the error.
