First, verify that you're able to change other settings successfully
through your ~/.ddd/init file, just so you know it's working. Then, try
finding a font description that matches something on your system using
xfontsel and use that.

As a side note, you might consider switching to FreeType (XFT) fonts in
DDD for better Unicode support:
