I reverted this and replaced it with a `uname` call. This seems like a
simpler way to do, and it's the way it was done before (before I
accidentally removed it...). I haven't tested it, though.

I didn't add this (sorry). It doesn't feel right at all. Putting an
"install myself" item in every program would be a horrible UI. It
should be done by the installer (bundled or otherwise), or the user,
not as part of the UI to the main program.
