question about middle mouse button

i don't know if i should post this kind of question here on in the user
mailing list.
please tell me if this is the wrong place.

i have a question about middle mouse button functionality:

do you know if there's a way to have the same functionnality for middle
mouse click between single click and double click operation mode ?

in "double click operation mode, middle mouse click can be used to select
files
while in "single click operation mode, middle mouse button is used to launch
a file and close filer.

i'm using single click operation mode, but i'd like to have same
functionality for middle mouse button as in double click mode.
that is to be able to select file with MMB while being in single click mode.
