Accessing some DVD Videodiscs.

I have been having some difficulty accessing the files on some home recorded DVD Video recordings. I won't recount all the details here as I've reported them elsewhere. However I've now found a work-around using ROX so I thought I'd mention it here in case others found it useful... or can suggest a better method! :-) The crux of the problem is that DVD Video recordings I've made with Philips recorders have been accessible, but those made with Panasonic recorders gave 'permission denied' errors and I could not read the data. The permission details were ---,---,---/--- [-1] [-1] for all directories and files. For obvious reasons I could not change the permissions on the files either as the discs are physically unwritable once finalised. But I found that "sudo ROX -d=/media" let me then mount and open the cdrom0 device and then let me open the relevant directory on the disc. I then was able to copy the VOB files to HD and access them there. This meant I was able to do what I wanted - extract the soundtracks from the recordings using a simple ROX app calling FFMPEG. :-) In fact this seemed faster than using FFMPEG directly on the Philips discs! The conversion was so fast compared with using my Iyonix that when the first file finished I thought something must have gone wrong! ;-> So the above seems OK as a solution. But it sets me wondering. Is there an easier way to do this that would automate detecting when the cdrom0 device was actually a Panasonic DVD and open it as root? Or allow me to set a default that let me treat all such discs as if I had root permission to read their contents? I suspect ther answer is 'yes' but I don't know enough about this aspect of Linux to know.
