I did get it going with a complete new install from CD though, but the ROX Desktop directory went AWOL so I had to use the Ubuntu Applications menu to run Zero Install every time to run ROX apps. On the machine with the broken Gnome I got Gnome fixed (somehow!) but can only run ROX_Filer from a terminal, but even that's worth it (the Ubuntu filer is rubbish at Copying files/directories).
