FWIW, this appears to have been fixed upstream or by Ubuntu maintainers. I just tried the same thing in Karmic and ROX-Filer 2.10 is recognizing *.jar as application/x-java-archive and *.zip as application/zip. But maybe testing by someone who has a better grasp of MIME magic and in other distributions is prudent.
