Ubuntu didn't do anything stupid. I think it was a change in the python
ALSA interface. ROX, especially as a whole desktop environment, is a
specialised niche with very little support (eg Ubuntu packaging). You'd
probably find you're better off with GNOME now unless you've got a very
low spec PC, or consider XFCE (XUbuntu).
