It looks like that's exactly what happened, but it was the gnome-python people that did it, affecting everybody. I've filed new bug reports, <https://bugs.launchpad.net/debian/+source/gnome-python-desktop/+bug/642913> is the one for Ubuntu and has links to the GNOME and Debian bugs.
