I've had an off-list email about this asking for more info/details for the list. So I can add the following. Older USB 'sound devices' did tend to be limited to 48k/14bit. But the newer 'asynchronous' USB devices *do* work up to 96k/24bit. They also do *not* require a specific driver to be installed. All you need to do to get 'aplay' playing up to 96k/24bit is to have the appropriate details in your ALSA settings - e.g. in .asoundrc. IIRC the next generation of devices may also reach 192k/24bit. So the problem seems to be getting specific player apps to actually send data to the default alsa device. AlsaPlayer does this, but refuses to play anything above 48k. Audacious does this up to 96k, but only for 16bits even when told to output 24 and avoid processing. MusicBox - which is my main interest here - simply fails to play anything even when I choose either of the 'also' options it offers. All I observe is that it shows 'playing' for a few seconds with the elapsed time staying at zero, then stops. The time it thinks it is 'playing' is far shorter than the duration of the files. This happens even for 44.1k/16bit wave LPCM files. So the problem here is that MusicBox doesn't work on my system. Does anyone recognise the syptoms or suggest how to 'fix' MusicBox?
