Yeah, found it. Thanks :) It seems that xfconf is considering the entries from $HOME broken and thus takes that the ones from /etc/xdg/... My original intention is making it startup and respawn certain clients if the process dies (for whatever reason). This would make restarts of individual components (eg. xfm4, but also user application) quite easy. (just kill it and let xfce-session do its job).
