I think the future of Xfce is quite secure. The overlap between
X11-diehards and Xfce users is extensive, so the X11 side shouldn't be
hurting for maintenance. The only way I see X11 support going away even
long-term would be if the next time there's some sort of major toolkit
change the X fans choose to fork rather than support the mainline.

There are quite a few X fans on Debian and downstreams too, so I hope
Debian will recognize that and keep at least one of the now several
competing X servers packaged; however this remains to be seen as I would
have said the same about 32-bit kernel fans.

Even if Wayland were to become mandatory for mainline Xfce without the LLVM
situation improving, Xfce already runs fairly decently on labwc and other
compositors that might be easier to port.

In the meantime, when xfwl4 is mature, having and official full Wayland
session should bring back some users who have gotten hooked on features
currently found only in Wayland, and it should help Xfce when some people's
login managers start dropping the ability to run X11 sessions.
