Thanks for the hints. HAL is already installed. Unfortunately both hal-device-manager and gnome-volume-manager say hald is not running. hal-device-manager tells me

  Could not get device list. Make sure hald is running!

And gnome-volume-manager says

  libhal.c 767 : org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply raised
  "No reply within specified time"


  ** (gnome-volume-manager:10537): WARNING **: manager.c/1205: seems that HAL is not running

but hald is running:

What am I doing wrong?
