It seems there is a problem with my CD-RW drive. After a burn failure it ended up in an unusable state, making hal unresponsive. The only way out was a reboot. At least I didn't find another way to reset the CD drive.

gnome-volume-manager is indeed what I want. When I plug in my camera it will mount it silently.
