Simple comes in a lot of flavors ... PCI target mode is pretty simple interface, barely more complex that direct ISA attach. While this particulare project requires zippo bandwidth, others might require a bit more than a simple USB target device at 400kbps. PC cards provide power and mounting ... past that requires extern power supplies capable of probably better than 20W. That said ... adding a USB single chip solution isn't a layout burden. And having a few fingers on the card isn't a problem for mounting it in an external case.
