ATI Stream - Monitor required?

I've searched the net and haven't been able to find an answer to this, so I
figured that I'd ask the experts.

I vaguely recall reading some time ago that ATI cards need a monitor to be
connected for stream processing to work.  Is this true with newer cards (or
was it even for older ones)?

The reason I ask is that I'm building a new server and want to know if it's
worth sticking a nice ATI card in just for dnet GPU.  The server will be in
a rackmount environment and will not have a monitor attached.

Also, second to that question...the server will have two PCIe slots.  I
can't use crossfire in it thanks to the wonderful nVidia chipset (ATI really
needs to start making server chipsets again), but could I run dual cards
stand-alone assuming that the first question is answered favorably to my
cause?
