Thanks for the answer and the added info; it helps a lot.  I was wondering
about a "dummy monitor" and a simple resistor setup would do the trick.

Yes, you have to have a monitor connected for the GPU to be active, or at
least something that makes the card think there's a monitor attached. On my
multi-card rigs, I use a 75-ohm resistor between the red signal and red
ground lines on the VGA connector. This satisfies the card at least enough
to allow me to activate the "display".

And yes, you can use two cards without crossfire support.
