Some of us are set up purely for graphics chip crunching, which doesn't convert over to the OGR stuff at this point in time (if ever). And as for the @home world, it's fine if you happen to be into the boinc thing and are set up for that. And there is nothing that says anyone "has" to crunch rc5. It's purely a choice type thing. If distributed.net brought out another project that made good use of graphics cards I'd take a look at it of course. Meanwhile I've enjoyed messing with rc5 over the years, and evidently there are others that enjoy the project too. To be really blunt, a bunch of the boinc projects world could learn a lot from the distributed.net projects as they are pretty stable and well organized. Sadly that can't be said for many in the boinc world. I've invested in the past in some of the other projects out there that are "good" for humanity and all that, only to watch them fall by the wayside for multiple reasons......... meanwhile, good old rc5 is still around and it's become like family to me...... comfort food in a computeresque sense if you will.... That using brute force may keep data safe for 10 or more years. But what would have happened if it was the second key tried, or the last one? It is just the luck of the draw of when we find the correct key. Previous tests were useful. They provided reasonable benchmark of how safe a encryption key is, but since most if not all website, banking, etc use 128 bit, testing a low 72 and finding that it will take more than 200+ years to try every key is a little far fetches. I would like to suggest that more emphasis be put onto Golomb rulers, or helping out the ...@home setup which all have scientific benefits. Well at least those are my two cents worth. Philippe P.S., I am already putting most of my eggs into the Golomb basket, for those of you who are wondering. Quoting bert <[email protected]> : Looks like in a couple of months time RC5-72 will hit the 10 year mark with probably 200 or so more years to go before we might see the end of the project(I seriously doubt a winner is gonna be found in our lifetime). _______________________________________________ rc5 mailing list rc5-Ra3b/QYEcJ3d140v2zMXi0fjHoOT/h/[email protected] http://lists.distributed.net/mailman/listinfo/rc5 _______________________________________________ rc5 mailing list rc5-Ra3b/QYEcJ3d140v2zMXi0fjHoOT/h/[email protected] http://lists.distributed.net/mailman/listinfo/rc5 _______________________________________________ rc5 mailing list rc5-Ra3b/QYEcJ3d140v2zMXi0fjHoOT/h/[email protected] http://lists.distributed.net/mailman/listinfo/rc5
