Magic constant 5381 in CDB hash function

Can someone explain (or point me to an explanation of) the derivation of the 
magic constant 5381 used to initialize the CDB hash function? 

In particular, I would like to know what to use as the initializing constant 
if the hash function were to be generalized to 64 bits.
