Sounds like hp-ux's shadow equivalent.
e.g. /tcb/files/r/root  from memory
Not there by default, you have to run tsconvert.
(yes, it's 2003, and hp-ux still comes with the
old fashioned passwd file bby default)

Similar thing on other unices (sco? osf?); they have a common
3rd party source whose name escapes me now.

tcb stands for "trusted computing base" iirc.
