stuck at pop3 user/pass stage: -ERR "unable to write pipe"

Hello,

I really need help (don't we all, haha):

I have qmail set up to where I can send mail but not receive.  I have it to
the point where the username/password popup comes up but when I enter my
user/pass, Outlook/Telnet gives the error: "-ERR unable to write pipe".
What can I do now, I've read/checked/configured all I know how.

-Is this a User/Maildir setup problem?

-Is this a checkpassword problem? (I'm not convinced it is, because when I
enter wrong password, the messagage changes to: -ERR "authorization failed")

My pop3d run script:
